Unfortunately, the LGBTQ community is faced with prejudice, and in some cases, harassment, due to their sexual orientation. This is mainly due to the sense of homophobia, which is often linked to a person’s religion or culture. Homophobia is the fear of homosexual people. In the United States, many believe that everyone should be able to express how they identify themselves and love whomever they wish to. Many see the LGBTQ communtiy as not being the social norm, nor the path God has given to them. In 2015, gay marriage was legalized in America, while other nations still found it to be debatable. Individuals who support the LGBTQ community argue that whether you are homosexual or heterosexual, you are still the same person, and are entitled to the same rights. As for people who are against it, they argue that being homosexual is not “pure”. For instance, when undergoing sex reassignment surgery, a few believe that we are playing God’s role. Some see it as being more of a choice and that it could be reversible or “curable”. Through the course of our history, those who identify themselves as homosexuals have had to be stay in the shadow, keeping it a secret. In recent years, however, our attitudes have shifted through the power of media. According to Robert Benenson the party said, “All groups must be protected from discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, language, age, sex or sexual orientation.” This helped gay activist win the support of the Democratic Party. With the support of the Democratic Party a new culture of sexuality developed. In 1992, the District of Columbia passed a law that allowed gay and lesbian couples to register as domestic partners, which granted them some rights of marriage. Having some of the governments support helped change many individuals views on LGBT people. It broke down a barrier that people had drilled into their heads about homosexuals. Now even though the LGBT community has same-sex marriage right, there are still some laws that need to be put in place. For example, there still needs to be a anti-discrimination law in the workplace set.
