Unlike many other countries, the United States does not have a nationalized police force because our founding fathers ensured checks and balances were in place to prevent any one government agency becoming too powerful (Doerner, 2012). In very simple terms, law enforcement is part of the executive branch of government. There are law enforcement agencies at the federal, state, and local levels, which include municipality police departments and county sheriff’s offices (Doerner, 2012). The people that work as sworn officers or agents at these various levels are charged with enforcing appropriate laws, statutes, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
