For the past few years, there has been this narrative of biased, violent, and unjust policing; that police officers need to back away from proactive policing. According to James Comey, an FBI director has claimed that this lack of proactive policing has resulted in more dead black men; that this lack of proactive policing threatens the future of the profession. After observing a violent crime increase after a lack of proactive policing, President Obama denounces his statistic as “cherry picked” data. He has also tried to denounce violent crime increases after the Ferguson, MO shooting, but the statistics hold truth. After the back off from proactive policing, the previous year had witnessed a 12% increase in homicide. The primary victims are black men, making the homicide victimization rate nine times higher than white men. On the contrary, there has also been an increase in violence among police officers. A couple months ago, four California officers have been slaughtered. Attacks on NYPD officers have gone up 23%; gun assaults on Chicago officers have gone up 100%, and gun murders among …show more content…
According to one study, officers are three times more likely to shoot unarmed white males than unarmed black males. Officers certainly need to be trained better; they should be able to make quick decisions in dealing with dangerous suspects. The police force isn’t perfect as there are officers who behave distastefully; officers with these behaviors need to be retrained (if they are already in the force) or need to have their badges turned in. If we continue to believe this false-narrative that the police is bias against the black community, we’ll be seeing more deaths (from the hands of officers) on mainstream media; riots and protests will continue to
