From 1791, when James Madison wrote the Bill of Rights, one of our ten rights as citizens is the right to bear arms. “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”(Bill of Rights). When it comes to this topic ,Conservatives believe everyone in America has the right to own a gun to protect himself, his family and his property. They believe that infringing on firearm rights is unconstitutional. They believe that the law should not be changed by government mediation because of its value to the country and how the early Americans needed firearms to survive. On the other side, Democrats believe there’s a demand for stricter regulations on assault weapons. Democrats believe in strengthening the number and rigor of background checks that take place when somebody purchases a gun. Within this check, they believe in having a mental health examination. The AWB of 1994 was a new federal law that prohibited civilian use of assault weapons, as well as certain magazines that were considered to be “large capacity”. The problem with this is that the term assault weapons is vague. Which is why I propose a reform to this ban. I feel that this ban should be on all long guns which classifies as automatic rifles, semi-automatic rifles, sniper rifles and shotguns. Along with the firearms there should be a ban on tactical equipment that allows you to “mod” out your gun to make it more lethal. The Second Amendment is a collective right so the reform would allow only those in the military the ability to use the prohibited equipment.
