Trigger warnings has been becoming controversial in college. They are advisories placed before a presentation, syllabus, or on lecture slides. In recent years, schools are either encouraging or discouraging trigger warnings. Some are saying it has a negative impact and some are saying it has a positive impact. Trigger warnings sparked in feminist blogs that bounds on an introductory statement alerting people of sensitive material that could potentially give traumatic memories. Trigger warning statement include sexism, racism, homophobia, etc. They are used to alert students who may be struggling with post-traumatic-stress disorder(PTSD), panic attacks, or anxiety. Triggers are not just about PTSD, it includes other mental illness symptoms such as anorexia, bulimia, suicide, and depression. Also, sound and smell contributes to a trigger. The purpose of using trigger warnings in a classroom is to alert students that the material the professor assigns could give an upsetting reaction. Trigger warning should be necessary because it will help students to take charge of their education. Instead of holding back their emotions, students can learn to challenge …show more content…
Trigger warnings are flawed because students might interpret that professors have the solution but really, the professors are not properly trained professionals. Professors cannot predict the final effect or outcome if a student gets triggered. Professors are not trained to help students to cope with their traumatic memories. Instead, schools need support groups, like trained professionals who know how to help students who may have any sort of trigger or PTSD. People that can help with PTSD are therapist. Professors need to be trained also when they see a student in agony. Support groups need to include therapist and people who are knowledgeable about PTSD.
