Imagine a world where you can get in your car without the worry of driving alongside drunks and teenagers. The once fictional dream of riding a driverless car is now becoming a reality. Many large corporations including Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, BMW, Audi, and Google are all rigorously working to produce an Autonomous Vehicle. What is an autonomous car? It is an automobile that uses motion sensors, cameras, and other technology to drive passengers safely and quickly to their destination with little to no human control. Some of these companies have gotten far enough to produce a semi- autonomous vehicle that can drive itself with very few flaws. In 2013 Governor Snyder had signed legislation allowing the testing of automated motor vehicles on Michigan roadways; this has raised concern for many citizens. Many citizens are worried for their safety when around test vehicles. Under the legislation that governor Snyder passed in 2013 all of these vehicles must be driving by an experienced operator, who would be able to control the vehicle if it could not itself. But according to recent test done by google, their semi autonomous vehicle had passed a vehicle test conducted by the dmv; this proves that these vehicles are already as safe as a human operator. The only way to make such vehicles safer is with thousands of more test and what better place to do them in then in Michigan with the harsh weather; If these self driving vehicles can survive Michigan road conditions they can cope with the weather in most of the country. Not only will the country’s vehicles and passengers will be safer because of it, it would also bring business back into
