In Henry Jame's "The Pupil", the author describes three characters and the relationships among them by using diction, selection of detail, as well as imagery.

Imagery is used by the author in lines, thirty-one through thirty five. It reads, "..she lowered to sigh, tapping her left side familiarly: "And all over-clouded by this , you know - all at the mercy of weakness-!" This goes to show that the imagery bused here points toward Mrs. Moreen's relationship to her son is both caring and motherly.

Moreover, diction is used in lines fifty-three through fifty-four. The lines read, "Pemberton was modest - he was even timid." This word choice hints that the relationship between Pemberton and Morgan is unsure and perhaps even a tad bit curious.
