Heroism is doing the right thing when others choose wrong. How is a hero distinguishable from others? A hero may be a prom-bound teenager saving victims from the scene of a car crash or a baseball team lifting a car to save trapped girl. The function of a hero is to do something courageous that helps others but does not necessarily benefit themselves. A hero is a leader. A hero is not one who desires something in return for their actions.
Surely, a hero’s function is to risk something of their own in order to help others. One function of a hero is bravery. An instance where a hero was brave was when a teenager named Kole Devisscher saved a boy who had fell through the ice on a frozen river. “Devisscher made a loop out of the rope and threw it back into the river, telling the boy to put it around his shoulders. It worked. Devisscher was honored with an award for bravery”(Teens and Heroism 3). Clearly, Devisscher showed heroism when he used the rope to save the boy from the frigid dangers of the icy river.

A leader is courageous and helps to guide others. Malala is a leader for standing up against the Taliban for girls right to education. Her actions were very courageous and risky, but she strongly felt that she should be aloud the chance to go to school. “In 2012, Malala survived being shot by terrorists for speaking out for girls’ right to be educated”(Malala 3). Malala took the chance of being shot when she spoke out against the Taliban. She was risking her life to help give girls a right to an education.
