In Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried, it features a chapter called “On the Rainy River.” What’s more O’Brien shares a troubled memory. This includes how O’Brien almost fled to Canada, to avoid being drafted into the Vietnam war. Having said that the tone of the chapter is troubled, as it shows through diction, imagery, and details.
In Comparison to the other stylistic features, diction shows the tone the most. “Hated,”(40) is used when O’Brien talks about how he felt about the war, the word itself reeks negativity as when talked about in the chapter about the how O’Brien hated the war. In addition the word “Squirm,”(39) is used to describe how O’Brien felt when remembering the memory of finding out he was going to be drafted into the war.
