Lights up. The single spotlight burned into my skin as I sat fixed on stage, flipping through a program nonchalantly and adjusting my glasses. Since we had begun to prepare this play, struggles had slowed us down. I had 156 lines, 10 monologues, each with SAT-level vocabulary, and a British accent; in addition, it was my first lead. The Real Inspector Hound definitely challenged me as an actress, and I loved it.
My partner and I ran through the play, not tripping over the lines as we had in the beginning. Each of us had studied the play, researching the unknown words, studying the habits of our characters, play critics. Finally, time for my first monologue.
“It will follow me to the grave and become my epitaph,” I started, recalling how last
