What was the Red Scare and how did it affect the Hollywood industry and individuals in the industry (there is a section about the Red Scare in your textbook and reference in slides)?

The Red Scare occurred after World War II it was a movement driven by fear that affected the entire United States. This fear was all related to people being afraid of the idea that socialist and communist were spreading communist rhetoric, which would spread all over the United States. This event affected the industry in Hollywood in a big way for actors, actresses, writers, and directors. It did this by forcing many people out of there jobs based on their beliefs. It results in people being blacklisted from the industry who were not allowed to be involved in the film industry. So many people like Dalton Trumbo were forced to go underground in the industry and work as alias’s in order to get jobs. Most of the time these jobs paid considerably less than what there talents were actually worth in the industry.

Part of me believes that Kazan does not deserve to be nominated or to have an honorary Oscar. I say this in part because of his decision to inform on his friends and betray them. This I stand by especially because the Hollywood Ten were not guilty of any real crime. Clearly, Kazan was looking out for his own interests more than anyone. However, another part of me can see or understand why some gave him an award in terms of him and the work he did as an artists. Unfortunately, I can’t see past the issue that he betrayed fellow artists and friends who suffered greatly as a result. I personally do not believe he deserved to have an honorary
