In his poem The Red Wheelbarrow, William Carlos Williams utilizes connotations which is “suggestions of emotional coloration that implies our attitude” (Stallings 567) to depict his appreciation of the red wheelbarrow. The theme that is portrayed throughout this short poem is “simple appreciation for the little things”.
Williams decided to set the wheelbarrow apart by first stating “so much depends upon” (lines 1-2) to signify the importance that the wheelbarrow plays in his life. Williams depends on the wheelbarrow for food, water, and cultivation which provides him with the necessities to live.
