The reformation was one of the 16th century’s major event and the result of many important people, including Martin Luther and King Henry VIII, who challenged and questioned the church and its authority. The Reformation included the Counter Reformation, which included King Henry VIII and the Protestant reformation, which included Martin Luther. For most of the European Middle Ages, the Catholic Church dictated the European citizens. Martin Luther was once asked to go to Rome on a mission, as this is where he believed that the Church was slowly becoming corrupt, as when mass was celebrated, they were celebrated quite fast. Before the Reformation occurred, there were two main branches of the early Christian Church: Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism. After the Reformation, Protestantism came into effect and had branches of its own: Lutheranism, Anglicanism (which had its own branches) and Calvinism (which had 2 branches). Martin Luther was one of the most important people in the Reformation as he kind of started the whole thing. He thought of it as corrupt and started to protest against it. This is when he made the 95 theses, a long piece of paper which he nailed to a door for everyone to see, had Latin suggestions, trying to fight the manner of which selfish and rich loving people were being penalised for sinning in the payment of money, or indulgences. On this paper with the theses on it, also lay some of the questions that Martin Luther was trying to answer. He wrote these questions as he though the Church was corrupt and wanted to know. This then changed the way people practiced their religion, as they knew their faith and church leaders were being questioned. From doing this, Catholicism branched off into other religions, like. Martin Luther, while dealing with all the theses and questions, gave birth to Protestantism. This came from the wars (which started from religious conflicts) and the leaders, who tried to do the best for their country. But for King Henry VIII, he changed the English church and it became known as the Church of England, which came under his rule. This came about because he wanted a divorce with Catherine of Aragon, as she hadn’t produced a male heir, and King Henry started to look for a new wife who would give him a successor. The Pope forbade the divorce, which led to Henry changing the church to his own. He made sure that the English clergy at the time recognised him as the head of the Church, otherwise they would get fined. The cultural side of the Reformation is that when Martin Luther changed the bible language from Latin to German. This meant that non Latin speaking people were then able to read the bible. Also, the renaissance period was close to finishing. When the renaissance and the reformation shared some of the 15th century, this changed some of the culture in countries.
