Environmentalism has been present since the 630’s with Arab treaties being established to deal with environmentalism and environmental science. the origins of environmentalism (within the western world) and is frequently believed as a result of the increased smog caused by the Industrial Revolution and but some early legal principles have also helped to push and encourage environmentalism based beliefs within western society. These legal acts include the Public Health Act 1875, or the Sea Birds Preservation Act 1869

These issues are things such as global warming, overpopulation, and genetic engineering. Although a decrease in interest is noticeable during 2007 due to the global recession.

Research conducted during 1974 showed that only 50% of people felt that environmental issues were important, while these stats increased to 80% during 1966. But environmentalism does have a particularly big following in Canada with a paper producing the headline “To say that the environment is important to Canadians is akin to saying Canadians are nice people”

Pictured above is a graph showing the rise of beliefs within Canada's general population over time. But regardless of the fact that this data is located from a singlecountry, the rise of environmentalism can be seen internationally because of changes to the understanding of cultural beliefs such as environmentalism within generations.

A common thought among the population is concern about the rising and changing weather patterns, and the increase in both the frequency and severity of storms within countries such as America, which can be considered to be one of the catalysts for a rise in environmentalism such as after Hurricane Katrina in 2007*.

There is a cultural shift towards sustainability and prevention of further damage to the environment. But is still as addressed earlier not as frequently occurring with most people making small adjustment to their attitudes or behaviours such as not dumping plastic into the ocean, or buying organic produce but will frequently only act on one environmentally conscious behaviour, and the spread of modern environmentalism is although appearing more popular in numbers format, still a fairly small belief system with most people preferring their comfort and habits over the frequently more costly and uncomfortable environmental
