Often times in a story characters behave differently based on the circumstances surrounding them. Circumstances can make or break a person, and in the case of Paul from “The Rocking Horse Winner” the latter is true. Paul is faced with a sad mother who wishes she married a wealthier man and led a fuller life, and Paul tries to fill this gap by betting on horses to win her money.
