Sex is a very delicate topic to discuss in schools. Sex education in school systems is scrutinized by many because of personal opinions. Educators, parents, and even students have opinions regarding sex education being taught in schools. Despite the opinions, Sex education is vital to growing child’s life. Engaging in sex unprepared could result in very serious consequences. Without the proper knowledge, adolescents could engage in sexual activity and it could possibly result in teen pregnancies and health risks. This paper includes a review of multiple empirical studies about sexual education programs for adolescents or children in middle or high school to help avoid pregnancy and disease. Sexual education programs were created to lower the number of adolescents who participate in sexual activity and to provide knowledge about the risks associated with sex. Sex education programs provide one avenue through which to promote the development of healthy sexual futures (Jennings, Howard, & Perotte, 2014). With the lack of a nationwide sexual education program, there is no set book of guidelines or rules to how a sex education class should operate. The states’ educational systems are left to provide sex education classes and curriculums. Since sex is such a delicate topic, providing an appropriate and educational program can be challenging. Having to choose from various types of sexual education programs also makes it a little more difficult to provide the most beneficial program for adolescents.
