Everyone's mind thinks differently. Some people believe that slaves were not tortured. Many believe that they were being saved from horrible people that would also buy them, but they were sold as things. Slaves were the better alternative than indentured servants, because they were cheaper ; “Indentured servants received passage to the colonies and would work for several years to pay off the debt of the travel costs. In the 17th century, nearly two-thirds of English settlers came as indentured servants.As indentured servants became more expensive, they were replaced by slaves” ( textbook 92). Also there were laws that changed their lives in which they were seen as things that could be disposed of as, and money. The lives changed of the African Americans in the 17th century , because all of the lives of slaves were obsolete for the colonists they were worthless, but were worth money. Then “1.8 million died in the ships” (Jones lecture ) before even arriving. The first year also didn’t end and also 1.5 million slaves died (Jones Lecture). All the lives of slaves were obsolete for the colonists they were worthless, but were worth money. The lives changed of the African Americans in the 17th century.
