As workplace discrimination reports have increased in the U.S., previous studies on this issue have all collectively concluded that interpersonal discrimination plays a profound role in the mental health and personality-related characteristics the people affected by it. One study was conducted to examine the potential role of personality characteristics in the association between reports of interpersonal discrimination and mental health. Within this study, there were three things that were discovered. First, it was found that higher levels of perceived interpersonal discrimination were associated with increased depressive symptoms. Furthermore, depression is the leading cause of disability for individuals ages 15-44 and researchers hypothesize that daily stressors may be an important factor in the development of depressive symptoms and disorders. Evidence suggest that perceived interpersonal every day discrimination is an important type of daily stressor associated with depressive symptoms that may have salience for racial/ethnic groups such as African Americans, Hispanics, and Asian (p. 2).
Another study investigated the associations between discrimination and health-related quality of life among African American and Caucasian men and women in the U.S. The results of this study found that African American men and women reported more discrimination than Caucasian men and women. The heath effects tended to become worse as the discrimination increased and complex relationships were revealed between experience of discrimination and race and gender.
