More Money, More Problems? The Great Gatsby is a classic novel published in 1925. In The Great Gatsby, most of the characters have lives that revolve around money. They believe that money really is everything. These characters are Tom, Daisy and Gatsby. Tom is a former football player from Yale University and was born into wealth. He is from Lake Forest and now resides in East Egg, where the “old money” lives. Daisy is married to Tom so therefore she is also wealthy. She was born into wealth in Louisville and resides in East Egg with Tom. Gatsby is the one character that was not born into wealth. He was taken under the wing of Dan Cody and eventually started working with Meyer Wolfsheim to illegally acquire his money. Jay Gatsby is Nick Carraway's neighbor and lives in West Egg, where the “new money” lives. All of these character deeply depend on money for happiness, well-being, etc. These characters have the same amount of problems and it can be contributed to being wealthy. I believe that having the access to more money will create more problems in your life. In The Great Gatsby, all the characters are above the middle class. Gatsby spends his days searching for his old fling Daisy hoping to reunite their spark. He throws parties and sends her letters but he does not get a response. Gatsby finally reunites with Daisy while in a hotel with the other characters. Gatsby states, “She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me” (Fitzgerald 130). This quote shows how Gatsby and Daisy are in so much need of money. Daisy only married Tom because he was rich but this caused Gatsby pain. In the end Gatsby got his desire but it costed him multiple years and it hurt Tom. Gatsby also believed his money got him well liked.
