Even though there has been progress towards equality, the idea of ingroup superiority and outgroup inferiority among races is still present. In America, there is no doubt that the outgroup are people of color and people who are not Christian. White people have always held power in society and this power has led them to be the ultimate ingroup. The idea of “white-supremacy” has been on the rise recently, which is a problem because white-supremacy is literally the belief that white people are superior to all other races. Within the last few months, there have been events that have shed light on how bad the situation is getting. One example is the right-wing rally that occurred in Charlottesville, Virginia. Some people present were white supremacists and white nationalists and the fact that people who believe in this were at this rally promoting this cause goes to show, with no doubt, that there is still an ingroup superiority mentality in today’s society. Another modern example of ingroup superiority and outgroup inferiority in America is in the way the media portrays white criminals versus black victims. When portraying white criminals, the media used photos that made the suspect look angelic, and used headlines describing how the suspect was brilliant but misguided.
