Frederick Douglass was an African American slave born into poverty. After escaping slavery he became a leader in the abolitionist movement. He created many antislavery writings and was a firm believer in equality. He showed the white population that African Americans can be just as smart and educated as a white person. While poverty certainly made Douglass’ life much more difficult, it made him a stronger person. Poverty gave him the ability to lead other African Americans through
