Katniss grows up in District 12 where poverty is a big part of everyday life. It was not unusual for people to die from starvation. When Katniss was eleven her father died. Leaving her and her family to fend for themselves with little money and food. Therefore, the situation forced Katniss to take her father’s position in the household because the mother had checked out of reality. And all who she can rely on is herself to keep her mother and sister from starving to death. Suzanne Collins, the author of The Hunger Game shows how poverty not only taught Katniss to survive but to use it to her advantage in the games. And because of this poverty plays a major role in Katniss’s life.
