In America, the meaning and the traits of “Samurai” has been changed nowadays, the word “Samurai” may sounds different in America than in Japan. According to the book “Bushido: Samurai Ethics and the Soul of Japan (Dover Military History, Weapons, Armor)” by Inazo Nitobe, he mentioned and defined Samurai as the source of virtues most admired by people are rectitude, courage, benevolence, politeness, sincerity, honor, loyalty, and self-control. Also, Samurai is a class identification and they are the military nobility and officer. However, in America, People generally think that Samurai usually refers to hero, they save people’s life, beat the bad guy, and help the people who are in needed. In the U.S, people always imagine they could become a hero, and there is no doubt the topic of a lot comic books and movies typically surrounding a hero, like Batman or Superman. Thus, people unconsciously generalize Samurai is one of the heroes in America. Besides, I found something interesting during my research progress that youngers in America think Samurai can do something unrealistic, like making their sword on fire. Youngers thought has affected by manga or video games nowadays. According to “The Samurai: Myth Versus Reality”, The samurai you typically see in media today are stretched and skewed from actuality, not to mention drawn from a small section of history.
