The Cruelty of the German Nazis
During the Holocaust Hitler was the leader of the Nazis. There were extreme methods of cruelty shown to the Jews. The Jews were both mentally and physically abused. In the book Night by Elie Wiesel it is shown just how cruel the Nazis were. Majority of the Jews did not survive. Atleast ⅓ of the Jews died in the camp but not directly by one of the many ways they got rid of Jews. They died because of the mind games the Nazis played on them. In the first place the Nazis turned the jews on one another. They put Jews that were stronger than most in charge of a group of Jews. They would also feed them so little that when someone had a little bread they would break out in a fight just trying to get some crumbs. In addition the Nazis separate families. Right when they got off the trains arriving in a camp they were sent to a line where men and women were first separated. After they were separated they separated again by age, ability, and health level. After they went through this process most were killed in gas chambers. They then told the Jews who were still living that if they worked they would get to be free. In Auschwitz the sign over the main entrance says “work is freedom” which gives them the impression that they will be free if they work. This messed with their mind because they would work as hard as they could but they were never freed, and never saw their families again. As Elie was talking to Stein and he says, “The only thing that keeps me alive is to know that Reizel and the little ones are still alive. Were it not for them, I would give up”.
