Larger civilizations developed near large rivers across the world because water is necessary to sustain life. Water is needed for people to survive. Water is used for growing crops that provide food to people and livestock that are kept on farms. Furthermore, water is used for cooking, cleaning, drinking and to make certain materials and medications. Moreover, water is used for just about everything that people, animals and plants need to sustain life. It makes sense that our ancestors learned this quickly and knew that developing a society close to a river that provided fresh drinking water was how we were going to make advance developments and evolve. However, it is known that humans did not always permanently settle close to water. Before there was evidence of developed civilizations, human and animals traveled the earth in constant search of resources to continue life.

People understood that for a society to develop, it was important to develop these cities near a large water source.
