Migrated from Mexico, “more than 11.7 million Mexican immigrants resided in the United States” (). The Sanchez family, migrated in 1976, lives in a Latino community in South Florida; the large extended family consists of ten: Hector, the father, Celia, the mother, six children: Junior, Emilia, Vicki, Gloria, Alejandro, and Carmen, Roberto, the nephew of Celia and Joey, the grandson of Hector. Living under one roof, this family affront many social issues. In need of a social worker to anatomize and find solutions, their duty is to “enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty” (). Living in poverty, Hector, the first in the family to transmigrate from Mexico, moved to the U. S. to seek work to provide for his family. With 2 siblings currently living at home, an uncle, and a grandson to support, Alejandro insisted on working to support the family rather than furthering his education after graduating high school. Immediately, Junior entered into the workforce field after high school to support his pregnant girlfriend, now wife and four children, putting his desire to attend college on hold. Roberto, an illegal undocumented immigrate, learned to speak enough English to find day work in construction. Two daughters of the Sanchez family, Vicki and Carmen has a disability. Carmen is profoundly hearing impaired due to her mother, Celia, contracting rubella while pregnant with Carmen. Vicki, age 25, diagnosed as Autistic at the age of 11, still resides at home with her family. After identifying all of the social dilemmas, a social worker will use systemic theories to implement services needed.
Obtaining resources to assist the Sanchez family, both clinical and systemic interventions are set in place by a social worker. Emilia was outcast by the family for an abortion, she previously had, leaving her feeling unwelcome by her family. “Gloria had never received a great deal of individualized attention from her parents” (). Although both Emilia and Gloria felt resentment from their family, Gloria received affection from her high school sweetheart Leo, whom she has been married to for six years.
