The Scarlet Ibis” is a fictional short story written by James Hurst.It is a tragic story about 2 brothers whose names are Doodle or William Armstrong and the older brother who simply goes by the name of brother. Brother always wanted a brother to play and run around with him, but quickly learns that Doodle is not going to able to play with him because he is very ill and is disappointed. Brother then tries to kill him by smothering a pillow on him, but then he finds out that Doodle is completely there, so instead of killing him he tries to teach him how to walk and run to prepare him for school just so he won't be embarrassed of his brother. Brother saw the sky darken and made Doodle row the boat against the current to get to the land. Once they reached land Brother started rushing home and Doodle who was now exhausted tried to keep up with Brother, but couldn’t. He even tried to call Brother by saying “Brother,Brother, don’t leave me! Don’t leave me!” (Hurst 425), but Brother ignored him and ran faster leaving Doodle alone.
