Moliere was a French playwright in the seventeenth century. He wrote The School for Wives in 1662, and he was known to write comedic plays that would teach lessons. The types of play he wrote had more of a comical consequence with behaviors that were punishing. Most of the plays that he has written were longer plays. With The School for Wives, it was about young women who would be raised as faithful wives. In this time period public and the audiences were not really sure what to think about his plays. The public thought he was a little too much, maybe a little too bold. In return he wrote more plays in the same genre as the School for Wives. I will discuss more in detail about the lessons learned and give multiple examples. One of the examples was that Arnolphe tried to mold Agnes into the wife he wanted all through the play. His plan did not work; she fell in love with another man. Arnolphe’s plan ended up backfiring on him but gave Agnes an opportunity of learning new life lessons. Agnes learned the simple things in life like where she belonged in society, how to love, also the meaning of love and how powerful love could truly be. She was not able to learn these lessons while being held underneath Arnolphe’s power. Then there was Horace, the man that Agnes fell in love with and his feelings were mutual. He confided in Arnolphe telling him his feelings towards her and wanted her to be away from the awful man she was living with. But little did Horace know, Arnolphe and Monsieur de la Souche were the same person. Horace learned a valuable lesson to not trust so easily with people. One of the last acts was filled with comic punishment when they realize that Enrique’s daughter was Agnes. This was a shock to the characters and the audience. They all realize that all of the hard work Arnolphe put into trying to marrying Agnes and mold her to be the wife he wanted her to be was all for nothing.
