Throughout the book “The Secret Life of Bees” Lily founds out a lot about both of her parents. This causes her feelings to constantly change to both her mother and her father. Lily starts out in the book loving her mother but also hating herself for killing her mother. She also starts off hating T. Ray, in the Novel she describes T. Ray as “Orneriness” and explains that the only kindness he shows is to their dog, Snout. Everytime she tried to talk to her father about her mother he would get angry and shut her down. Sometimes he would even act in his anger. He only gave Lily very few scraps of information like that she was buried in Virginia where her family lived and things she did to lure roaches out of the house.
In the book, while at the Lawyer’s Office she used the phone to call T. Ray. When he answered he kept asking her where she was angrily and all she asked is if he knew her favorite color and when it didn’t answer the question she knew that he did not know which color she loved best. This had made her said and didn’t change the way she felt about him only proved a point. She then wrote a letter later that night spilling out everything she would like to say to T. Ray. In the letter she explained how he made her feel with the things he did and how he was a bad father, then tore it to shreds.

One of them help her discover the Boatwright sisters and their home in Tiburon where she would later discover more about her mother. She discovers that her mother had only married T. Ray because she was pregnant with Lily, she also found out that her mother did not love T. Ray which hurt Lily because the only reason her mother was so miserable and stuck is because she was added to the equation.This also made Lily feel unwanted in the first place but is reassured that her mother did in fact love her very much which made her feel a lot
