The novel begins abruptly mentioning that “things fall apart at home when Jaja, did not go to communion and Papa flung his heavy missal across the room and broke the figurines on the étagère” (Adichie 03). The shattered figurines change the family dynamic in a way where they no longer have to hide behind a wall. The author illustrates that Mama doesn’t need the figurines to reorganize herself after Papa’s abuse. The woman who once took hours and hours of her time to polish the ceramic figures decides that she won’t be the victim of the house but perhaps the criminal in the end. Since they symbolize mama’s frugality, she wants to make sure that no missal is ever thrown at anyone or anything because she wouldn’t want anyone to be hurt the way
