Throughout the book The Shining by Stephen King, the story travels through a journey of conflicts. The main conflict began in Boulder, Colorado. Jack Torrance, one of the main characters, followed in his father’s footsteps and had become an alcoholic. His addiction to alcohol had driven him to commit awful actions causing his marriage to fall apart. Jack’s drinking habits made his anger issues worsen. Eventually, he loses control while being drunk, and he accidentally breaks his son Danny’s arm. This incident made his wife Wendy contemplate how much longer she could put up with his behavior. The thought of divorce lingered in the back of Wendy’s mind after this incident. The more Jack continued to drink, the more he and Wendy grew further apart. The other reason is that he and his drinking buddy Al Shockley had driven home drunk one day and hit a child’s bike. These two incidents had made him come to the realization that he had to change his habits and turn his life around. Jack’s struggle with alcohol addiction ties in with the conflict of the story because it leaves his marriage impaired and the thought of alcohol frequently lingers in the back of his mind, which both creates problems further down the line. After Jack loses his most recent job, his buddy Al helps him get a new job at the Overlook hotel for the winter. Jack sees this as a tremendous opportunity to repair his marriage and have a fresh start. However, moving to the hotel does more harm than good. The isolation of the hotel eventually catches up with Jack, making him crave alcohol again. Meanwhile, Wendy is struggling to build up her relationship with Jack again, but she realizes
