TITLE
"Death is not the biggest fear we have; our biggest fear is taking the risk to be alive." (Don Miguel Ruiz)Yet death is something that is inevitable, and for some shortcoming. In Ernest Hemingway's "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber," Francis Macomber deals with the humiliation of being a coward and constantly being out down by who is supposed to be his right hand. Hemingway explores the theme of death through influential symbols and flashback, foreshadowing.

Francis Macomber and his beautiful wife decide to take a trip to a safari in Africa where they are guided by Robert Wilson a white hunter. Throughout the trip Margot Macomber wife belittles her husband. Which is very strange since the man his supposed to be the one with the pants the relationship which in this case is the very opposite. “… Had just shown himself very publicly, to be a coward”. (pg.12) shows when Margot is reflecting back to a time Francis did something cowardly. “It had started the night before when he had weakened and heard the lion roar (pg.19)” the narrator is referencing back to when Francis’s had got scared when the lion was near.
Last but not least the story has foreshowing and while reading the story one can tell that Wilson thought towards Margot are to try and get with her even though her husband is there with them. “He was grateful that he had gone through his education on American Woman before now because this was a very attractive one” (pg.16) And of course the main one the title “The short life of Francis Macomber” basically tells the reader who the story will be about and how his life will be cut short but he will die
