The Significance Of The Son In Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha

The son may represent a symbolic figure of bad luck or maybe the greed in the world. We can infer this because the son is so persistent and has quite obnoxious behavior which is pushing Siddhartha back from reaching his enlightenment. His existence in the story as a whole could perhaps have been bad luck the entire time. Siddhartha is a good father since he, “took leave of him to look for the boy” (Hermann Hesse 102), the him being Vasudeva. Siddhartha judges his own ability as a parent since he considers his son's happiness over his own and continuously attempted to please his son in the beginning of this chapter. Vasudeva advises Siddhartha once the boy runs away to, “let him go, my friend, he is not a child any more, he know how to look
