Achilles and Hektor In the Iliad by Homer, Achilles and Hektor share many similarities, but are also different in many ways. Both of these great warriors share their acceptance of fate, conformity to the obligations of hospitality, and respect of burial rights. Their personalities differ because of their courage, sense of duty, and respect. Through these two characters, Homer exhibits that heroes, and all people, are flawed. There are three main similarities between Achilles and Hektor.Firstly, both Achilles and Hektor are seen accepting their fate without fear of what will come. Achilles was told that he would die shortly after the death of Hektor, However this did not stop him from completing his mission and ending Hektor's life. He knows that he would die, but he was ok with that outcome. Hektor also shows his acceptance of fate when he does not beg for his life when Achilles wounds him in battle. Firstly, he uses Achilles withdrawal from the war to show that humans suffer from selfishness. Many of the Achaean soldiers were dying in the war, but Achilles only cared about proving his point. He put himself and his meaningless grudge before his comrades. Secondly, Homer uses Hektors flee from Achilles to show that humans can be cowards in the face of adversity. When Achilles came for Hector he ran instead of facing his enemy, showing himself as a coward. Lastly, He uses Achilles rage towards Hektor to show that people are rash and reckless. When Achilles finally killed Hector, he was so furious that he attempts to destroy his remains. His anger led him to make a decision before thinking it through.
