Although almost everybody are familiar with the horrors of the Holocaust through the story of Anne Frank and the works of Elie Wiesel, a lesser-known concentration camp in the city of Terezin was a powerful tool for Nazi propaganda during World War II. The city, called Theresienstadt by the Germans, is located in the modern-day Czech Republic. The German Gestapo took over the site, originally an eighteenth-century fortress, in 1940. To the outside world, the people's lives in the camp was presented as a model Jewish community, but in reality, people were overcrowded, starvation was prevalent, disease ran rampant, and most occupants were shipped off to Auschwitz for extermination.
