Many people view Grendel as a human with human like characteristics. Since Grendel is a defendant of the Biblical Cain, he shares linage with that of a human. Besides the way Grendel eats he is actually very similar to humans. Beowulf claims that Grendel has “no weapons” (S. Heaney line 683.) This gives the reader an understanding that from our point of view Grendel seems harmless so why would Beowulf want to fight him? Grendel has the appearance as monster. He has many animal like characteristics and some outrageous features.
