One acts on the way they are brought up in the world. When a slaveholder is put in this system, they act the way they think they should act, because of the system. In other words to believe that this statement “It’s not the fault of the slaveholder that is cruel, so much as it is the fault of the system under which he lives”(p.135) is an accurate observation, is a must. To think that both the whites and the blacks were mutually affected by the system of slavery is an understatement.
Reason for the observation above to be true is because as America was developing they saw Africans as a cheaper way for hard labor than an indentured servant. To do so they had to be brought from Africa to America, which wasn’t a luxurious trip. The African Americans were being shiped like cargo. All for the purpose of America to prosper to greater things and a better future. The whites saw it as helping the black slaves to be more civilized: so they thought. This was not the way to treat a human being but that is how the system wanted it and the whites were nothing but puppets in this cruel stage of America. Twelve Years of slavery showed a man named
