The Sniper The story that had the most ultimate suspense was “The Sniper”. In short, “The Sniper” is dealing with the Republicans that, at the time, were waging a civil war with the Free Starters. In Dublin, Ireland (1920s), the Republicans wanted all of Ireland to be free from British rule, whereas the Free Starters had made a compromise with the British and had agreed to let them rule the 6 countries in the northern province of Ulster. In the story, it describes that the republican sniper has “the eyes of a man who is used to looking at death”. An informer.” Both pieces of evidence build suspense within the story because they make the reader’s heart also start beating, as if they were right there with the sniper. The evidence also makes the reader become anxious of what will happen next, but worrisome of the events that will lead to the end. For example, the reader starts thinking ‘Oh no’, ‘What will happen next?’, etc. Lastly, the sniper successfully kills the enemy on the roof across the street, and is curious to whom his enemy was. Towards the conclusion of the story, the text says, “Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face.” This builds suspense for the reader since it is definitely unexpected, and it creates a heartbreaking moment between both the reader and the character in the story.
