In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, the snowman is a symbol representing racism. Jem and Scout built a snowman out of dirt and covered it with snow. They did not realize it, but they made something that symbolized racism and inequality. In the novel, Scout says, “Jem, I ain’t ever heard of a nigger snowman.” (Lee 89) This quote embodies the fact that Scout says racist things without realizing it, and it symbolizes how Scout’s innocence has been corrupted. The society she was raised in affected her outlook on life.
