The Social Norm

“Weird” is a widely known term often used to describe someone or something that is unusual and who does not fit into the social norm. That has been used to describe me; however, I have never seen myself as weird. I’ve only ever seen myself as, well, me- Humans, despite outside appearances, are inadvertently the same. Blood pumps from our heart to our vital organs all throughout our bodies. We all function the same way. However, what does differ between each and every person is how we think. Our brains may look the same and ultimately do the same thing, but every single person has their own thoughts and feelings. That, in my opinion, is the most fascinating thing about the human race. And I want to know more about it.

This is because I am an avid reader. Reading expanded my imagination and helped me learn how to look for facts before forming opinions. But because I did this I turned into an introvert. When given the choice of working alone or in a group I always chose to be alone. It was because of this that I did not make many friends during my earlier school years. I preferred books or sitting in my room on the computer over socializing with people and in return I became very lonely. Instead of sitting with friends at lunch or in class I would sit alone and just look at people. You can learn a lot about people by just looking, but you can learn more by talking to them, which I couldn’t seem to do. However, during the summer before high school I realized that I would never have friends if I didn’t try and get over my introvert habits. This revelation inspired me to join the Marching Band in 9th grade. I want to move on from it after graduation. My goal is to go into a different field. I want to study psychology and criminal justice. Music helped me, and I want to help others, but with a different approach. I want to help by catching those who think they are above the law. My main interest is motivation. Knowing why people do what they do, specifically killers is what interests me the most. I wish to learn more about the human mind and use that knowledge to the best of my ability. I want to start out as a police officer, but my long term goal is to become a criminal profiler for the FBI. I am driven to meet that goal and will work hard to get there.
