After cole was mauled by the Spirit Bear and at the verge of death, he finally realized that he wanted, and needed change. He wanted to change his self image, and his way of life. He no longer wanted to be a lying, heartless, no good bully that everyone thought he was. The first way Cole changed was by coming to the conclusion that he wanted to have a choice on which direction his life would go in. When he decided that he wanted to live, he finally understood that: “to be alive was to have choice. The power to choose was real power not the fake power of making others feel afraid. ”1 Cole wanted to have a choice. He wanted to choose if he would die on that island or stay alive and go back to Minneapolis. He also wanted to choose if he was still …show more content…
Another way Cole wanted to change is by how he didn't want to have to prove himself to anyone anymore. He wanted to be able to tell the truth and not have anyone question him. After Edwin and Garvey didn't believe him about the attack, and if it really was a Spirit Bear he simply told them the truth. Although he had proof- the bear's fur- he tossed it into the water, it was his new beginning. “His words would become his only proof.”2 Now that he got a second chance in life, he wanted to make it right. These three small acts shows that Cole is truly ready to …show more content…
He learned how to take care of himself, cook, fish and carve. But most importantly Cole learned how to control his anger, and by doing so show his emotions. On the first day back to the island Edwin showed Cole the soaking pond and ancestor rock. Ever since then- more than a year later - Cole has been soaking in the frigid waters of the pond, and carrying the heavy rock up the hill, to then roll it away as his anger, every single day. By doing this, cole is able to clear his mind from any racing thoughts and keep calm. “ All he had done was sit in cold water and try not to think, and yet that simple act had made him feel so calm.”3 In doing so, cole found the first way he was able to control his anger. After Edwin, Garvey and Cole had finished their whale dances Cole asked Edwin what a dance of anger would be like. Edwin explained to cole that in order to dance the anger dance he must conquer his anger and destroy it for good. Once Edwin and Garvey left the island, Cole tried to dance the anger dance but each time he did so he felt as if he was forcing it. I believe that in order to dance the anger dance he needed to be truly sorry for what he did. Furthermore Cole needs to whole heartedly get over himself and his anger. This will then bring him to dance the anger dance and feel as if he is not faking or forcing it. Finally one extra special night, he danced the anger dance. He danced as if this was the only thing that had ever
