We believe that America’s new national anthem should be “Same Love” by Macklemore because an anthem should bring a country together by acknowledging the struggles of the past and the future. “The Star Spangled Banner” represents our origin, but not where we are today as a nation, and the new anthem should unite us around something we all have experienced. An anthem unites people, making them feel as though they are part of something larger than themselves. Diverse people become one, like a family, and it inspires a strong feeling of pride and connections. By expressing both past victories and the challenges we now face, a new anthem would help recreate the nation and improve society so that it is more inclusive for all. “What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming,” indicates that Americans felt that having strength and power over others was what made a country great (line 3-4). American opinions vary; however, many Americans will disagree that it is a high-priority. Strength is a quality of great importance for a country, but they believe that uniting together both nationally and internationally despite our differences is what truly makes a remarkable nation. Not only will they disagree with what makes a great country, countless Americans do not feel that America is truly a free country. “O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave,” (line 8) expresses that America is a land of freedom. The mindset of past Americans differs compared to our own, along with the struggles and battles fought. “The Star Spangled Banner: was created in that past mindset; therefore, it does not represent modern American society.
