The Struggle In Emil Sinclair's Demian

Throughout the novel of Demian, the main character Emil Sinclair has had a significant portion of his life described, showing his development as a person by the major events and characters that he meets. Demian first starts off as a rather innocent boy, growing up in a tradition and conservative Christian family where he is rather sheltered in way of the “light.” However growing sheltered, he is rather initially unprepared when facing the “darkness” that comes upon him when he ideals are challenged by characters such as Kromer and Demian. This is where he begins to grow out of the bubble that he is in, and develop a sense of the world and who he is as a person.

One of the lessons that I find very fascinating is simply breaking out from the bubble you are in and really taking steps to exploring things outside your comfort zone. This is first observed when Sinclair first faces the darkness in elementary school during a lesson of Cain and Abel with Demian’s view that opposes the traditional view. When challenged, he returned to this comfort zone of his parent’s protection and admitting his wrongdoings. But as Sinclair becomes older, he continues to make attempts to free himself from conformity and explore the “darkness,” where he gains wisdom from Demian, Frau Eva, and Pistorius to eventually muster the confidence to face the “darkness” alone.

Sinclair has learned to follow his goals and aspirations, helping not only himself with his happiness but also saves Knauer by becoming his mentor. This shows the importance to Sinclair of having a goal oriented mind as well as having a support and connection system that would help him achieve
