The Struggle In Linda Sue Park's A Long Walk To Water

In 1987 civil war drove an estimated 20,000 young boys from their families and villages in southern Sudan. Most just six or seven years old, they fled to Ethiopia to escape death or having to join the rebels . They walked more than a thousand miles, half of them dying before reaching the refugee camp in Kenya. The survivors became known as the Lost Boys of Sudan. In the book ALWTW Salva was considered one of the lost boys he hasn't seen his family for 19 years since the battle in his village. He thought they were dead, so he moved on. In this essay I will state how Salva, the main character in Linda Sue Park’s A Long Walk to Water is able to survive and overcome a variety of challenges through his hard work, relationships, and luck.

Salva did a lot of hard work during his journey to help and not burden others. The first thing that Salva had labor on, was that he was left behind by a group that believed Salva was too small and weak and will be no help to them if they take him. He grows closer to an older woman ‘Auntie’ and works to not burden her. The text states, ‘He worked hard so she would not send him away. Salva has worked hard to not burden no one to make them think he is useless, then Salva made friends also he has meet his uncle, and then he got help from an aid worker (his other friend). They all had listened to Salva and helped him through his difficult journey, Also he was really lucky to survive many deadly situations with war , bad people and wild animal attacks. Salva has suffered a lot during his 19 years, but he has survived , he learned so many things and lessons. And now he has found his father and mother and Salva is willing to help the
