The article, “The Supersizing of America” by Barbara Rolls explains the relationship between portion sizes and obesity rates. Big portions of foods that are energy-dense seem to be the leading cause of the increase in America’s obesity rates. There are many studies that suggest this. Obesity is one of the biggest public health problems we face today. We are eating more and more calories than we used to because our lifestyles have drastically evolved. Our food today is now more abundant and we have more free time that allows for less physical activity. There’s also been an increase in budget friendly and convenient foods such as fast-food. This type of food can be very unhealthy. More importantly, fast food places and restaurants have made their meal portions bigger than the average person should be eating. When something is pre-portioned, most people will eat all that is there and all that he or she sees in front of them on his or her plate. Snacking is also a problem. People tend to be distracted when they snack and therefore eat more. This happens especially with pre-portioned snacks. Humans have difficulty judging how much they should really eat and most of us stop when we are filled to the top. With the availability of food, it’s hard to resist. Especially after a delicious meal, many of us want more. Although it is portioning that seems to be causing our obesity rates to increase, eating less isn’t always the best option. As mentioned earlier, the overconsumption of energy-dense foods is causing the increase in obesity. Instead, if we start to eat large portions of low-energy dense foods such as fruits and vegetables, it would be much better. Fat is the main component that makes a certain food high in energy so foods with more water content are naturally better for you and don’t cause much weight gain. They also make you feel
