The narrator in the short story “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe should be receiving mental help for the following reason. Poe was born January 19, 1809. He wrote a lot of poems that was very well known. For example, he wrote a very famous poem called “The Raven”. Till this day we still read about him. But behind the notebook, he is a very strange man. He cannot distinguish fantasy from reality, cannot manage his own affairs, or is subject to uncontrollable impulsive behavior.

The narrator cannot distinguish fantasy from reality. In the story, it states that “now,I say, there came to my ears a low,dull quick sound as a watch makes when enveloped in cotton. I knew that sound well too. It was the beating of the old man’s heart. It increased my fury, as the beating of a drum stimulates the soldier into courage”. He killed the old man because of the “evil eye” but what if a whole bunch of people have the same eye? Poe would probably murder them too. This is very dangerous for the people in the community. For 8 days straight, he planned out the murder of the old man. Each night he would sneak into the man’s house and he would take an hour to just put his head through the window. But if he is insane, he would not be able to do this every night.
