The narrator of “The Tell Tale Heart” wasn’t insane and should be charged for his crime. The narrator was provoked to kill this old man because of his vulture like eye. He was trying to seek revenge on the eye because, he said it was evil. He isn’t insane because, he said he thought of a plan to kill this old man. To be able to think through a plan or scheme he would’ve had to use at least a little bit of thinking. While he was trying to figure out how to kill the old man his concise should’ve come into play. Another reason he isn’t insane is he could feel his guilt when the police were there investigating. If he were insane he wouldn’t have been able to think so many important details and factors through in his head. On page 89 of “The Tell Tale Heart” the narrator says, “It was impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain; but once conceived, it haunted me day and night.” This quote shows that he was thinking about what he was going to do after he thought of his plan and his concise was trying to convince him to do otherwise but, he didn’t listen. Another thing that shows that he wasn’t mentally ill is, he says that he proceeded with caution not to wake the old man from his sleep when he entered each night to watch him. This fact shows that he was considering all factors showing that he was having to use his head and really think about what he was doing which he wouldn’t have been able to do if he had a mental illness. On page 90 of “The Tell Tale Heart” the narrator states, “And every morning, when the day broke, I went boldly into his chamber, and spoke courageously to him, calling him by name in a hearty tone, and inquiring how he had passed the night. So he would’ve been a very profound old man, indeed, to suspect that at every night, just at twelve, I looked in upon him while he slept.” This quote shows that he came up with a plan not only to kill him and where to put the body but also how to get himself out of being a suspect. In “The Tell Tale Heart” on page “Was it possible they heard not? - no no! They heard! – they suspected! –they knew! - they were a mockery of my horror! – this I thought, and this I think. But anything was better than this agony! Anything was more tolerable than this derision!” This quote is talking about how he felt when the police officers were there investigating the crime scene.
