Coming of Age.” What defines coming of age? Coming of age is defined by responsibility according to age. Bobby does not come of age during The First Part Last by Angela Johnson. This tale is about how Bobby a sixteen year old is in charge of his baby Feather, and how he takes care of the Feather ,and tries to find his identity at the same time.

Firstly, Bobby does not come of age because of Feather. Bobby is trying his best to take care of Feather but he fails in some key areas of parenting. He is a single teenage parent, so I do give him credit for doing a pretty decent job taking care of Feather, but his studies decline because of it. A quote that shows this is, “I can hardly keep my eyes open in Brit Lit”(42 Angela Johnson The First Part Last). This quote shows that keeping Feather makes Bobby tired in class and his teacher goes on and asks about him being a father and whether or not he is getting any help from his parents. STOP RIGHT HERE

This shows that Bobby has not come of age yet because he does not take any responsible steps toward living closer to the babysitter or helping himself not be tired during school, he only does the night work of parenthood and is not responsible for any of the day work involved.. Parenthood does not mean just looking out for one’s kid, it means looking out for oneself as well as one’s kid. Bobby is trying his best, but not meeting with the best of his ability to make a good home for Feather and himself to grow up
