Anthem is about a dystopian society where people live life simply and are stripped away of their individuality. Rather than parents assigning names, characters are given names that convey unity, which is then followed up with a series of numbers to differentiate people.

Every country is struggling with idea of “freedom of speech.” even the “most free” country of them all, America. In many countries that offer this right, citizens are allowed to say what they want, but if anything that can ruin the country is said, then consequences will be faced. The novel raises the question: Does freedom of speech actually exist? By implementing fear within the citizens, it prevents the people from using their voice even though it’s important.
