In this essay, I am going to identify for you one of the themes in a poem. This poem was written by an American newspaper journalist. This journalist worked for the Miami Herald. This journalist wrote this poem after the Haiti earthquake that happened on January 12, 2010. He wrote this after the earthquake destroyed the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince. He wrote this two days after the earthquake destroyed the town of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The name of the poem this journalist wrote is named “Sometimes the Earth is Cruel.” The theme is death.

The first reason why the theme is death is because it mentions a ton of disasters that have happened. It mentions some tornados that have hit the island of Haiti. It gives us some statistics of the dead from the tornados that compare to this recent earthquake. It says that the Earth is cruel for trying to conspire to kill off the human race even though the curse for humans is death. It goes as far as to name the tornados and the years they happened. This is the list of the tornados: “Tropical Storm Gordon in 1994, Hurricane Georges in 1998, Tropical Storm Jeanne in 2004, Hurricane Dennis in July 2005, Tropical Storm Alpha in October 2005, then Hurricane Wilma, and then the double whammy of Hurricanes Fay and Gustav.
